Barrymore became a true celebrity, thanks to her role as the divine Gertie in Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. This movie is a masterpiece which brought Drew into fame. The huge success of that 1982 film endeared Barrymore to millions of audience members. But following leads in two more films, Irreconcilable Differences and Firestarter (both 1984), the young actress began to yield to a destructive lifestyle like taking drugs, alcohol, and too much partying. A child expected to behave like an adult but fragile, Barrymore began drinking at the age of nine and started taking drugs a short while later.

On the other hand, in her barely teens, she failed to continue her fortune for she made a lot of “unforgettable” movies which is said to reinforced her image as a “has-been.” This made critics to say that this might be her downfall. But surprisingly, in the middle of her teen years, Barrymore entered rehab and cleaned herself up. Her career again started to shine. Drew wrote her autobiography entitled “Little Girl Lost”, which detailed her experiences and travails with drugs and alcohol. In the early 1990s, she entered another phase in her career, gaining unsavory reputation for playing a series of vampy, trampy trailer-park Lolitas. With this, she turned into memorable sexy performances in Poison Ivy (1992), The Amy Fisher Story (1993), and Batman Forever (1995). All of them featured her in her seductive and bare-it-all image. Drew also posed nude with her boyfriend, James Walters on the cover of Interview magazine, then modeling for a series of trashy Calvin Klein ads, and she finally take-it-off when she posed nude for Playboy in 1995.


The image suddenly changed in 1996, when Drew made movies which transformed her from a slut to a sweetheart. Many of the her next movies after her brief role in Wes Craven’s Scream and a lead in Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You were huge blockbusters. She began working steadily again and she eventually replaced her “offscreen” persona into that of a delightful and sweet-natured girl. This image was reinforced by the movies she made after like Ever After (1998), The Wedding Singer (1998), Never Been Kissed (1999) and Charlie’s Angels (2000). All of the mentioned movies are undoubtedly marked her as one of the most gorgeous and versatile actresses in Hollywood.
